Schaumburg Area Information:

Schaumburg is a relative newcomer on the pages of Chicago history. Though its early roots as a German settlement go back to the early 1800s. Schaumburg’s real impact has been over the past 50 years.

Early accounts point to Trumball Kent from Oswego, New York, as the first of the "Yankees" to establish a settlement in 1835. But it was a German-born surveyor, Johann Sunderlage, who is credited with the first recorded homestead in Schaumburg Township.

The hustle that was characteristic of Chicago in the years between 1850 and 1900 largely left Schaumburg behind. Primarily agricultural, it lacked both the natural waterways and the railroad lines that brought prosperity to other communities. A small commercial center around what is now Schaumburg and Roselle Roads provided the essential services to the small farming community: two general stores, several cheese factories, a cobbler, a tailor, a wagon maker and a blacksmith. Few roads existed, and travel was laborious, but the meadowlands were productive and game was plentiful. More and more German immigrants moved in to farm the land. Townsfolk, many of whom were originally from the Schaumburg-Lippe region of Germany, officially declared the name to be Schaumburg in 1850. The area remained almost exclusively of German descent until the late 1920s, when the Great Depression began to take its toll on small farmers. Schaumburg remained a relatively isolated community of only 130 residents, many of whom still spoke primarily German, until the 1950s.

Two major events marked a whole new way of life. The expansion of O’Hare Airport into a major airfield in 1955 and the construction of the Northwest Tollway the following year positioned Schaumburg to share in the rapidly expanding push into the northwest suburbs.

In 1956 the tiny community incorporated. While it encompassed only two square miles, early village leaders had a much bigger vision. Within several years they adopted a comprehensive plan that reserved large areas of land for future commercial and industrial growth. Meanwhile, the rural character of Schaum-burg began to change as more and more people found the location and the affordable land to their liking. New housing began to spring up, led by Alfred Campanelli’s Weathersfield subdivision, the area’s first grand scale housing complex.

Schaumburg village officials were careful to include a variety of housing types, including multi-family and apartment buildings in order to attract a diversity of residents. During the 1970s and 1980s, more residential homes were built in Schaumburg than in any other community in northeastern Illinois.

Industry, too, was attracted to the area. Accessibility, affordable land, a good plan for growth, and high quality work force, led corporations to select Schaumburg as a base for their growth as well. In the late 1960s Motorola built its impressive corporate headquarters near the new Northwest Tollway. The opening of Interstate 290 along the village’s eastern border brought another wave of growth. Woodfield Mall, one of the largest shopping malls in the entire country, opened in 1971, and its success inspired many other retail and commercial ventures.

If the 1970s were characterized by retail growth, the 1980s were the age of corporate and industrial expansion, along with the establishment of many service industries, hotels and dining establishments. By the middle of the 1980s, Schaumburg had emerged as one of the dominant employment centers in the northwestern suburbs.

Good roads, good schools and other family-oriented amenities kept pace with the accelerated growth. Throughout the building boom, sales tax revenues from the extensive commercial ventures helped pay for municipal services. Because of this positive revenue stream, the Village of Schaumburg has never once had to levy a municipal tax to pay for services.
